i started painting the hands with words on discarded pieces of wood, linoleum,
and broken bits of mirror. the image of the hand signifies humanity to me.
i see the open palm as a sign of deliberate vulnerability. i paint the words
that give me strength and comfort, in the hopes that others will be able to
find similiar fortifying thoughts. since i started painting the hands in the
early 1990's, i have given away or sold about 600 of them. some people tell
me they read the words on their hand every morning.
