the wire hands started
in the same way that many of my more repetitive pieces have..i found a large
spool of black telephone wire on the street. first, i started weaving aces
and three dimensional heads out of the wire..i quickly landed on the hand
image out of familiarity. in the beginning, i used the process as a period
of personal meditation. one hand can easily take between five and fifteen
hours of attention to make. i find that they are best made in solitude.
i have since made the hands in most colors and izes but my favorite remains
the black. people ask me if they are based on specific people's hands, and
i always say no. but actually, some of them are based on the memory of some
people's hands..and those, i don't show or sell. the wire hands were used
extensively in a movie out last year with katie holmes..it was called pieces
of april.
